Developing bespoke compliance training for an offshore wind company

Code of conduct, Ethics & Compliance Training | read time: 2 min

An international offshore wind project developer engaged GoodCorporation to develop a new annual compliance training module for its employees.

The client’s existing compliance training provided only limited coverage of the issues set out in their Code of Conduct. They wanted to replace this with a single annual module that brought together a broader range of compliance topics in a way that was practical and relevant to their business.

Crucially, the new training needed to reflect the specific compliance risks associated with working in the offshore wind sector. The company operates across complex projects and multiple markets, where compliance issues can have significant implications for its ability to continue doing business. It was therefore important that the Code of Conduct and the training addressed these risks in a way that was relevant to employees, helping them understand how they could arise and what was expected of them when they did. Raising awareness of these issues and reinforcing a strong compliance culture were therefore important objectives of the training.

Our approach

GoodCorporation developed a bespoke, interactive e-learning module covering key areas including ethics and decision-making, speaking up, anti-bribery and corruption, fraud and money laundering, third-party relationships, bullying and harassment, human rights and responsible business practices.

To develop content that reflected the company’s risk profile and operating environment, GoodCorporation interviewed heads of key functions and conducted a high-level review of relevant documentation. Sector research was then used to develop tailored scenarios and quiz questions based on situations employees may encounter in the offshore wind industry.

The training incorporated interactive features, scenario-based questions and videos created to illustrate real-world situations. GoodCorporation also worked closely with the company’s compliance team throughout the review process to ensure the module aligned with their requirements, visual style, tone and approach to compliance.

The completed training was designed for roll-out through the company’s Learning Management System as its consolidated annual compliance training.

Client outcomes

The project gave the client a more relevant and practical approach to annual compliance training, bringing their Code of Conduct to life through content tailored to the offshore wind sector.

The training provided:

  • A single annual training module, bringing together the key compliance topics covered by the Code of Conduct
  • Sector-specific scenarios and examples, helping employees understand how compliance issues can arise in their day-to-day work
  • An interactive learning experience, using videos, quizzes and other features to encourage active engagement with the content
  • A contribution to building a stronger compliance culture, emphasising the importance of compliance and helping employees understand the role they play

GoodCorporation is also providing follow-up compliance support to help the client embed the training and strengthen their wider compliance approach.

Why it matters

Compliance training is an important part of maintaining an effective compliance programme. When training becomes outdated or disconnected from an organisation’s current risks and operating environment, it can become less effective at reinforcing expected behaviours and responsibilities.

Regular training gives organisations an opportunity to keep compliance expectations relevant to employees’ day-to-day work and reinforce the standards set out in the Code of Conduct. It can also support a wider compliance culture by helping employees understand their responsibilities and the role they play in raising concerns and making appropriate decisions.
